Dublin pubs: Popular bar makes difficult decision to stay closed due to rising Covid cases

A popular pub has announced that it will not be reopening its doors this week after Christmas, as Omicron cases continue to rise across the country.

The Old Royal Oak has served the people of Kilmainham since 1839 but the Costello family have faced their fair share of difficulties during multiple lockdowns and changing restrictions.

The family run bar made the difficult decision to protect its staff and customers after what has been an extremely trying time for the industry.

They thanked all their customers for their continued support and promised to reopen on 13 January.

The much-loved pub posted: "Due to the increasing numbers of COVID cases, we have taken the decision to take a break for a few weeks.

"This is to protect both our staff and our customers.

"We would like to thank all those who have supported us in these exceptional times.

"We will return 13th January. Thank you."

Locals praised management on the difficult decision and thanked them for all their hard work over the years.

One person said: "Mind yourselves guys! See ya when you're back open again."

Another wrote: "Right thing to do."

A third commented: "Thank you the lovely pints in December."
