Dublin pubs: Pandemic claims another popular local business as Cardiff Inn announces closure after 51 years

Yet another much loved Dublin pub has fallen victim to the pandemic after the Cardiff Inn announced it would not be reopening.

The popular Finglas boozer on Cardiffsbridge Road, which has been serving locals since 1969, broke the sad news on its Facebook page this afternoon.

They wrote: "Unfortunately due to the Covid 19 and the restrictions that would have to be put in place we will not be opening back up.

"All the staff would like to thank everyone of the customers that supported us over the years. You have really been the best, for me the 21 years that I have been there have been great and wouldn't have changed a thing. Thanks again."

Locals were quick to pay their respects to staff and wish them well.

One wrote: "Good luck to all the staff - will miss you all and a big thank you to Andrew for always making us welcome."

Another added: "Sorry to hear this sad news for you all, many a great night was had in the Cardiff. Thanks. What a loss to Finglas."

Several popular Dublin pubs have been forced out of business since the lockdown saw them shut their doors and turn off their taps.

In May, the historic Queen's Bar in Dalkey announced that it was closing, and just last month, it was revealed that the Donaghmede Inn would not be reopening its doors.

The sad news comes as the new Cabinet meets to discuss Phase 4 of Ireland reopening - with a decision on whether pubs can reopen next Monday as expected set to be high on the agenda.

The Cardiff Inn's manager Andrew Flood told Dublin Live he was devastated, but paid tribute to his staff and loyal customers, and also the pub's owners.

He said: "I would like to thank all the staff for all their help over the years. They've been like a second family.

"I'd also like to mention our loyal customers and locals - in the 21 years I've been working and serving the customers here, I can say with certainty that they really are the best, and they, along with the staff, were the reason I stayed for so long. We will miss you all.

"I'd also like to thank the owners Tony and John Moran who looked after us all the best they could. Thank you all."
