Dublin pubs: Historic Kilmainham bar to remain closed to protect staff and customers from Covid-19

A historic Dublin pub is set to to stay closed due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

The Old Royal Oak in Kilmainham has made the difficult decision to keep their doors shut to protect staff and valued customers.

Management had planned to reopen yesterday, but are still worried about the growing number of cases and hospitalisations around the country.

The much-loved pub had been serving locals since 1839 but have faced their fair share of difficulties during multiple lockdowns and changing restrictions.

The Costello family once again thanked their loyal customers for their continued support during the pandemic.

They tweeted: "Thank you all for your appreciation of our decision recently to close for a time in January.

"The overwhelming messages of support for our small business really touched us. It is a testament to the great people that have been through our doors down the years.

"We were due to open back up today but with continuing case numbers and hospitalisations we feel it is only prudent to continue to protect our customers and staff.

"In light of this we have decided to keep the doors closed for a small bit longer.

"Again we thank you all for the unwavering fellowship you have shown the Royal Oak

"We will keep you informed of our proposed re-opening via the usual channels.

"Go raibh maith agat agus feicfidh tú go luath!"

Locals applauded management for making the tough call.

One person said: "You're doing the right thing. Come the summer the place be back

"Buzzing for sure."

Another wrote: "Fair play. Can't wait to get back, but reckon this is the right call."
