Dublin pubs: Famous GAA landmark The Big Tree set to reopen after long closure

An iconic GAA pub near Croke Park is set to reopen in the next few weeks after major redevelopments.

The Big Tree is entering the final stages of a major refurbishment much to the delight of locals and students.

The popular meeting spot was bought last May in a multimillion-euro deal that saw the pub turned into a 163-bedroom hotel.

The original bar was established in 1453 and was a necessity on All-Ireland days.

It was known for the live sports played across 20 screens inside as well as pool tables making for competitive live entertainment.

However, it has been replaced by the hotel with the total development costing the €20m.

A large ground floor restaurant and bar, the traditional Big Tree Irish pub and a rear terrace have also been built on the Dorset Street site.

Work on the site started on June 3, 2019 with the coveted building contract being given to Duggan Brothers Ltd.

The pub's closure was met with great criticism from students, GAA fans and locals alike.

Thankfully, a comeback is on the horizon with the pub looking for an experienced manager to lead the Big Tree into a new era.
