Dublin pub of the week: A traditional Irish experience in the mountains

Mountain views, trad music and live Irish dancing; does it get more authentic than that? Throw in a menu of delicious seafood and European cuisine and you have the delightful experience that is a visit to Johnnie Fox's.

Johnnie Fox's is located at the top of the Dublin Mountains and is actually regarded as the highest pub in Ireland, as well as one of the oldest having been established in 1798. It is nestled in the township of Glencullen and is surrounded by fresh air and even fresher views.

Why is it our pub of the week this week? Well, good weather is (hopefully) on the way and with that, we're looking to nature.

A hike up Ticknock and explorations around the Dublin Mountains will be on the agenda for many a Dub this weekend. But while the sun still shines and the bellies begin to rumble after a full day of activities, wholesome grub and pints is what we crave.

Once you finish the Ticknock hike, Johnnie Fox's is a mere 18 minute drive. What's on the menu is dishes like wild mussels, smoked salmon, hake and chips, lamb stew and more comforting fare.

The food, and pints of the good stuff, can be enjoyed inside the pub in its old timey setting or outside in the glorious sunshine, something us Irish know to take advantage of when we get it.

While the pub is a wonderful go-to haunt during the summer months, popular with walkers, cyclists and other adventure seekers, the winter months allow the venue to fully embrace its cosy traditional Irish feel. When the days are dark and cold, you will often find storytellers here.

If Johnnie Fox's is known largely for one thing, it's probably the live entertainment. In fact, traditional entertainment takes place here seven nights a week as well as during the day on the weekends.

The pub's famous dinner and entertainment show, Hooley Night, attracts a loyal audience and is well worth experiencing.

Whether it's a post-walk refreshment or a night filled with lively music and entertainment, Johnnie Fox's should be on your list of best pubs in Dublin to visit.
