Dublin priest Michael Guckian, 81, killed in hit and run late on Saturday night while visiting in Roscommon described as 'lovely man'

A Dublin priest was killed in a hit and run on Saturday night in Roscommon.

Retired priest, Fr Michael Guckian, was visiting Keadue in the western county when he was hit by a car on Saturday night at 11pm.

The 81-year-old was walking in the area when he was knocked down and subsequently died at the scene.

Fr Guckian lived with the Oblate Order that is based in Inchicore, Dublin.

A spokesman for the Order confirmed to Dublin Live that Fr Guckian had died, describing him as a "lovely man".

The car did not remain at the scene following the incident but a 20-year-old male who was driving the vehicle later presented himself to gardai at Carrick-on-Shannon.  

The road from Derrenargon Cross to Leitrim Village was closed but following a forensic investigation, it reopened on Sunday evening.

Gardai in Boyle are currently investigating the incident and have asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Garda Station on 071 966 4620, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
