Dublin Pride announces new parade route for 2019

A new route for the Dublin Pride Parade in June has just been announced.

Earlier today, organisers confirmed that the annual parade is to march down O'Connell Street for the first time in six years.

In August, anger erupted in the LGBT+ community following the visit of Pope Francis to Dublin, which included a journey of the 'Popemobile' down Dublin's main thoroughfares, including O'Connell and Dame Street. The Pride Parade has been forced down an alternative route in recent years to avoid congestion problems.

In a statement on their website, Dublin Pride said: "We are delighted to announce that the proposed route for the 2019 Dublin LGBTQ Pride Parade and march will see us return to the very heart of our city."

Taking place on the last Saturday in June (29th), this year's colourful parade will travel down O’Connell Street from Parnell Square, before turning onto Eden Quay and marching past Liberty Hall.

It will then cross the River Liffey at Talbot Memorial Bridge and travel along City Quay, Lombard Street, Westland Row, finishing with a free outdoor event in Merrion Square.

Some 7,000 people from over 150 different groups are set to take part in the parade this year, with "floats and marching bands and colourful costumes", according to its organisers.

Dublin LGBTQ Pride Parade is a free public event supported by Dublin City Council.
