Dublin Port sting sees €700,000 of tobacco hidden as potatoes seized

Revenue officers at Dublin Port have seized over 1,000 kgs of ‘roll your own’ tobacco that was hidden in container marked "potatoes".

The smuggled tobacco was labelled ‘Flandria’ and has estimated retail value of over €700,000.

The illegal import would represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of around €560,000.

It was discovered when officers searched a container on its way in from Rotterdam.

The search was carried out using Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner.

Investigations are ongoing.

A spokeswoman said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
