Dublin politician who couldn't see family after daughter's death slams Merrion Hotel controversy

A Dublin politician has spoken of her pain after she couldn't see loved ones for months following the death of her daughter.

Clontarf Councillor Catherine Stocker slammed the recent Merrion Hotel controversy saying she "had to spend time in her grief calculating who to invite" to the funeral due to lockdown restrictions.

The Social Democrats politician said she was unable to meet her loved ones for months after the funeral due to a massive jump in cases during the third wave.

Speaking on Twitter, she said: "I buried my daughter in December - with 18 people there - we had to spend time in our grief calculating who to invite and couldn't hug our family and friends who were there.

"We expect more than the letter of the law from our public reps."

Former minister Katherine Zappone recently came under fire for hosting a private event of 50 people at Dublin's Merrion Hotel.

The event occurred on July 21st, six days before it was announced that Zappone would be appointed a newly created role of Special Envoy to the United Nations.

Tainiste Leo Varadkar was in attendance and the new TD for Dublin Bay South Ivana Bacik also confirmed she was present.

Cllr Stocker continued: "While 'indoor dining' was open in December & people were having pints, the parents' room beside the NICU was closed and five days after a C-section I was walking around Parnell street for hours at a time every time the staff needed us to leave the NICU. People have made huge sacrifices."
