Dublin plummets more than 20 places in latest Global Liveability Index

Dublin has dropped over 20 spots this year in the rankings for how liveable cities are, according to a new report.

The capital had come in 29th out of 140 in the Global Liveability Index at the start of 2021 but it has slumped in the following six months.

But the city has suffered one of the worst drops in how liveable a city is, sinking to 59th according to the latest Economist report.

It is the fifth-highest drop in the rankings with only Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Prague dropping more spots.

The categories for ranking a city includes culture, environment, healthcare, education, stability.

It's clear that Covid and how countries dealt with the pandemic has had a massive impact on city rankings.

Auckland in New Zealand has topped the rankings for most liveable cities.

In fact, one of the main reasons the judges awarded Auckland the top spot was because of how they dealt with the pandemic.

The report said: "Auckland has done a remarkable job of controlling Covid-19. It has reported just 26 deaths from the disease, roughly one out of every 200,000 people."

Damascus, Lagos, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and Dhaka, Bangladesh were the least liveable cities, according to The Economist report.
