Dublin pet left with horrific injuries after attack by two dogs in Clontarf

A Dublin dog has been left with horrific injuries after being attacked by two others dogs in a park.

Peanut the Yorkshire Terrier suffered several puncture wounds and needed emergency vet care following the attack in Clontarf on Wednesday.

He was out walking with his owner when he was set upon by two other dogs in a field behind St Anthony's Church on February 24.

Both dogs that attacked Peanut were medium sized, stocky brown terriers and were off their lead and without a muzzle when the attack happened.

The owner of the dogs that attacked him was a middle aged woman who was helpless to stop the dogs as they set upon poor Peanut.

A graphic photo of Peanut's injuries was shared by LoveClontarf.ie, and locals were shocked and heartbroken to see the damage caused to the innocent little pet.

Further calls for legislation to prosecute owners whose dog attacks another when off the lead were made.

Helena McEnery, whose dog Luna was attacked and killed last year on nearby Alfie Byrne Road said that owners of dogs who attack "have no idea the heartache they cause".

Luna was also a Yorkshire Terrier and died after being set upon by a German Shepherd when Helen's partner had taken her out for a walk.

She said: "Sickens me!! My Luna was attacked and killed a stones throw from here last July!! Those irresponsible dog owners need to be punished!! They have no idea the heartache they cause. Hopefully Peanut makes a full recovery."

LoveClontarf said: "Peanut, the Yorkshire terrier in the photo, was attacked by two dogs in the field behind St Anthony’s Church yesterday afternoon at 2.45 pm.

"The dogs who attacked Peanut were brown, stocky, medium-sized terriers. Neither dogs were muzzled or on leads. The owner, a middle-aged woman, had no control over the dogs as they went for poor Peanut.

"We’d like to highlight this is not a dog problem, but a dog-owner problem. Any dog who is out of control and attacks another dog could easily attack a child. ALL dog owners should keep dogs on leads in public places, particularly with the high-saturation of people spending time in open spaces at the moment. Even if you know your dog would never attack another dog or person, it being off the lead and bounding around people can be very stressful.

"We wish Peanut a speedy recovery!"
