Dublin parishes set up card machines for tap-and-donate contactless church collections

Dublin parishes will be setting up card machines to use for contactless church collections.

200 parish churches in the capital will be hooked up with the "tap-and-donate" machines.

According to the Business Post, the Dublin Archdiocese says the move comes in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Traditionally, a collection basket is passed around the parishioners during Mass, and cash is collected for the church.

However, fewer people than ever are now carrying any cash due to the rise of contactless payments, spurred on by the encouragement of their usage amid the worst days of the pandemic in Ireland.

Californian tech firm Clover struck a deal with the Archdiocese to assist with the installations of the new AIB-powered machines.

The Archdiocese previously piloted contactless payment measures back in 2019.

The Dublin Archdiocese is bigger than the borders of Dublin county, also taking in churches in Wicklow, Kildare, Laois, Wexford and Carlow.
