Dublin pair arrested after thousands stolen from bank accounts

A Dublin pair have been arrested after allegedly stealing thousands of euros from scamming bank accounts.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested after €7,500 was allegedly laundered into her bank account following a 'smishing' attack.

She was released last night without charge.

And a 21-year-old man was also arrested today after allegedly "purporting to be a bank employee" and "calling to the homes of account holders who had received scam calls".

The scam sent account holders a text, believing it was from their bank with a link attached which brought them to a cloned website.

They then type in their PINs which gives fraudsters access to their bank account and transfer money to a money mule account.

A Garda spokesperson said that the man was "collecting their bank cards from them."

They added: "As the fraudsters already had the victim’s PINs, he was then able to use their cards to make withdrawals and purchases."

The 21-year-old is currently being held at Clondalkin Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
