Dublin mum with stage four breast cancer issues emotional plea for €200,000 treatment in Thailand

A Dublin mum who has stage four breast cancer that has spread to her liver, spine and hip is hoping to travel to Thailand for potentially life-saving treatment.

Nicola Hanney was diagnosed with the aggressive disease in 2016 at age 36.

Following months of battling and trying different ways to fight the disease, she got the amazing news she had hoped for - that the cancer had shrunk.

Speaking about her first battle, Nicola said: "It was one of the toughest times of my life. The shock - for weeks, I would just lie in bed. I just didn't know what to do. Give up, or - was there a point in fighting?

"But then something changed. I thought these doctors don't even know what type of person I am. So I started fighting."

After being told that it was unlikely she could ever have children, Nicola fell pregnant in 2018.

Five months into her pregnancy, she discovered a lump which turned out to be cancer that had returned.

She said: "I had a bigger fight now. I was fighting for the two of us. I was so worried - what was the cancer doing to the baby? But I did everything again that I could do possible."

Nicola's son Cal Jackson was born on 24 June 2018, and is now 18 months old.

Speaking of his birth, she said: "He fought all the way through it with me. The two of us fought every day.

"Since he's been born, I'm still fighting. There hasn't been a day that hasn't been about cancer. I would do anything for him [her son] to stay alive."

Nicola has posted an emotional video about her fight, which she is doing for her young son, in the hope that she can survive.

She has tried numerous treatments in an effort to battle the cancer, including radiation, chemotherapy and medical cannabis.

The potentially life-saving treatment will cost €200,000 and Nicola has set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise the necessary funds.
