Dublin mother tragically killed by van on footpath while jogging in Raheny named locally

A mother who was tragically killed after being hit by a van while out jogging in North Dublin has been named locally as Nuala Grant.

The mum was knocked down by the vehicle after it mounted the path along James Larkin Road, Raheny at around 7pm on Wednesday night.

It is understood the van was driven onto the scenically shared walkway and cycleway -which is popular among cyclists and joggers - and travelled down the path for around 1km before fatally hitting the Dublin mum in her 30s.

Ms Grant was pronounced dead shortly after the incident and her body was removed to Connolly Hospital where it was followed by a post mortem.

Funeral details for Ms Grant have been announced as she will be laid to rest on Saturday.

A post on RIP.ie reads: "Grant, Nuala (née Minnock) Raheny, March 4th 2020 (Tragic and sudden). Loving wife of Gordon and adored mother to Aoibhe, Fionn, Seán and Emer.

"Deeply missed by her loving family, her parents Brendan and Maura, brother Paul, sisters Niamh and Ciara, parents-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.

"Reposing in her family home tomorrow, Friday, 6th March, from 6pm to 8pm.

"Removal on Saturday morning to Church of St. Paul, Ayrfield, Dublin 13 arriving for 11am Funeral Mass, followed with Burial in Balgriffin Cemetery Extension."

A large number of emergency services and as many as 35 Gardai attended the scene last night and it is understood that the man driving the van was uninjured in the crash.

One witness told Dublin Live: "There was the helicopter, quite a large one, patrolling around and looking thoroughly, around three fire trucks, a couple of life boats (maybe like three?), a local who had a boat helped in the search, seven road policing and gardaí cars and police lines at most entrances to the cycle lane.

“I saw around 30-35 gardai, firefighters, members of the coastguard etc . All patrolling up and down the cycle lane with flashlights and trying to keep the public out . The van was also visible and gardaí were surrounding it.”

Speaking about the fatal crash, a garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí were called to the scene of a serious road traffic collision in Raheny, Dublin 5. The collision involving a pedestrian and a van occurred shortly after 7pm Wednesday 4th March 2020 on the James Larkin road, Raheny, Dublin 5.

"It's believed the pedestrian, a female in her 30s was struck by a van after it mounted the path and travelled a short distance along the James Larkin road.

"The female was fatally injured in the collision and pronounced dead shortly after. Her body has been removed from the scene and taken to the mortuary at Connolly Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

EMERGENCY VEHICLES AT SCENE OF SERIOUS COLLISION INVOLVING A WOMAN AND VAN IN RAHENY

"The male driver of the van was uninjured and no other persons are believed to have been injured in the incident.

"The scene at the crash site is currently preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the cycle pathway on this road remains closed.

"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and road users with camera footage, who were travelling on this road between 6.45pm and 7.30pm, to contact Raheny Garda Station on 01 6664300 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
