Dublin MetroLink and Luas upgrades pushed back another ten years - but DART extensions given green light

The Dublin MetroLink project has been postponed for another ten years.

A new draft strategy published on Tuesday by the National Transport Authority (NTA) shows that work on the proposed underground train line linking the city to Dublin Airport - itself already scaled back massively from initial plans - will now not get going until 2031 at the earliest.

Also postponed for a decade is the proposed Luas line extension into North Dublin towards Finglas.

And mooted Luas extensions towards Poolbeg, Lucan and Bray have also been put on the backburner for at least ten years.

DART extensions out to Celbridge, Maynooth, and Drogheda, however, are set to go ahead under phase one of the Greater Dublin Area Strategy 2022 to 2042.

The new BusConnects plans and upgrades to existing Luas and cycling infrastructure will also eat into the €25 billion in funding that the NTA will pup into Dublin over the next ten years.

The earliest completion date for the beleaguered MetroLink project is now 2037, while the Luas upgrades are now not expected until 2034 at the earliest.
