Dublin Marathon moving to lottery system from next year

Entries for next year's Dublin Marathon will be decided on a lottery system instead of the traditional first-come, first-served online process.

Organisers say the decision has been made due to increased demand for race entries.

An extra 2,500 places were made available for this year's race, but it still didn't meet demand.

Race director Jim Aughney said: "Many races that have more interested runners than they can accommodate have moved to a lottery registration system in recent years.

"Demand for the Dublin Marathon has never been greater, and we believe the lottery is the fairest system to offer all runners the same opportunity to participate."

Organisers say they will select applicants randomly "but in a manner to ensure that the current balance of Irish and overseas runners and runners of all abilities is maintained."

There will be 22,500 places available for next year's race, with a number of these allocated to Athletics Ireland members.

Entries will open from November 1 to November 30 online through Eventmaster and successful registrants will learn their entry status via SMS and email between January 3 and January 10.

There will be a registration fee of €15 and those unsuccessful will be refunded the full fee.

It costs €90 to run in the race and the initial €15 will go towards that figure for successful applicants, who will have until January 31 to redeem the offer.

After this, any initial places not redeemed will be re-allocated and applicants will learn their entry status between the February 4 and February 7. They will have until February 14 to accept.

Morocco's Othmane El Goumri won Sunday's men's marathon in a record-breaking time of 2:08:06, while Motu Gedefa of Ethiopa won the women's race in a time of 2:27:48.
