Dublin man given six months in US prison following fatal one-punch assault

A 26-YEAR-OLD Dubliner has been caged for six months for a one-punch attack that killed another Irish man in New York in 2018.

Steven O'Brien, with and address at 42nd Street, Queens, in New York, agreed to the sentence which was part of a plea deal in Queens County Criminal Court last November.

Danny McGee, 21, from Longford, was punched by O'Brien following a verbal row outside The Gaslight Bar in Queens on Thanksgiving 2018.

He and later found unresponsive and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of Danny's death was determined to be from a blunt impact which prosecutors said was from O'Brien punching him once in the side of the head.

In her victim impact statement, McGee's mother Colleen blasted O'Brien for not pleading guilty earlier on in the trial.

She also said her sense of loss will never go away and that life won't be the same.

O'Brien's lawyer Matthew Gartenberg said his client was very remorseful for what happened and was looking to move on with his life.
