Dublin-made pizza crowned the best in Europe at prestigious awards

A Dublin-made pizza has been crowned as the best in Europe at a prestigious award ceremony in Amsterdam.

The Freshways’ Hand Stretched Sourdough Pizza (spicy pepperoni & chorizo with Italian buffalo mozzarella pearls & fireroast red peppers) has won the acclaimed World of Private Label Salute to Excellence Awards.

The pizza, which is available exclusively at Aldi stores in Ireland, was up against stiff competition from food and drink producers across Europe.

John Curtin, Aldi’s group buying director, said: “Creating outstanding private label products and selling them at prices that can’t be beaten is at the core of Aldi’s business.

“As is the case throughout Europe, private label has become hugely popular with Irish shoppers over the past 10 years and now accounts for almost 50% of all grocery sales in Ireland.

“With such a huge number of private label products available across the continent, to win three awards is a huge achievement and a great testament to the unrivalled quality of the innovative Irish food and drink producers supplying our stores.”

Aldi’s Irish-made products won three awards in total.

Its Specially Selected Irish Vintage White Irish Cheddar and Specially Selected Handmade Thai Inspired Vegetable Burgers also won awards.
