Dublin Lord Mayor Nial Ring would be 'thrilled' to host reception for Katie Taylor if Shane Ross doesn't

Dublin Lord Mayor has stepped forward to offer a homecoming reception for Katie Taylor if Sports Minister Shane Ross fails to do it himself.

In the early hours of this morning the Bray superstar boxed her way to greatness taking the title of undisputed world lightweight champion after a hard-fought win over Delphine Persoon.

Taylor was given the fight of her life by Persoon and many at ringside felt the Belgian had done enough to win as the Irishwoman hung on at the end.

This week has seen huge calls for an official state homecoming - but as of yet no arrangements have been announced.

On Friday Dublin Councillor Christy Burke put pressure on the government to recognise what she's done for Irish sport regardless of the result of the fight.

Dublin Live contacted a number of authorities and sporting bodies to ask if arrangements were in place - but as of yet it's still not clear.

The Sports Minister today released a statement congratulating Katie on the huge achievement - but there was no indication any official ceremony was going to be held.

Now Lord Mayor Nial Ring has stepped forward saying he'd be "thrilled" to host something in the Mansion House if Shane Ross doesn't "give her the recognition she deserves."

He said: "Huge congratulations to Katie Taylor on becoming the world undisputed lightweight boxing champion.

"I hope Minister Ross gives her the recognition she deserves, but if not, the office of the Lord Mayor of Dublin will be thrilled to organise something here in the mansion house to recognise her wonderful achievement.

"Women like Katie and our own Kellie Harrington (who the Minister ignored and I stepped in and organised DCC to give civic reception) are blazing a trail and we need to recognise and acknowledge their amazing achievements. I want to make sure this happens!"

The Mayor had previously taken a pop at Ross who failed to acknowledge Harrington's world title despite attending the Women's Hockey team's homecoming, both All-Ireland men's finals, and Ireland's historic rugby test win over New Zealand.

He said: "He was there for the hockey women, he was there for the Dubs, why is he not here when we have a world champion in this area?”
