Dublin lockdown: Capital 'could move to Level 4 or 5 soon' warns expert

An infectious diseases expert has warned that Dublin could move to a dreaded Level 4 or 5 lockdown if cases in the capital continue to rise.

Professor Sam McConkey, who is head of the Department of International Health and Tropical Medicine at (RCSI), says that further, tighter restrictions may be the only sensible thing to do if things do not improve in the capital.

He told Newstalk: “The earlier we do it, the less duration and the less restrictive those measures will have to be."

He continued: "The rate of Covid-19 cases has gone up in four or five counties to almost the same level as Dublin and action is required now."

He added: “Unfortunately, if the number of cases continues to rise, whether in Dublin or in those counties, then unfortunately the only sensible thing to do is to go up to Level Four or even Level Five.”

So, what would happen if Dublin did go into a Level 4 or Level 5 situation:

Level 4

  • Household visits - banned
  • Indoor gatherings - banned.
  • Sports events without spectators would go ahead.
  • Further travel restrictions possible
  • Schools and colleges would remain open but with restrictions in place.

Level 5 - (Same as lockdown restrictions experienced in March and April)

  • Travel restricted to 5km radius of home
  • No travel to work allowed
  • No indoor or outdoor gatherings
