Dublin LGBTI+ organisations awarded funding of €40,000 under new youth strategy

A number of Dublin-based organisations that support support services working nationally with LGBTI+ youth have been awarded funding worth a total of €40,000.

The funding under the grant scheme for LGBTI+ Capacity Building initiatives for professional service providers who deal with young people was announced by the Minister for Children, Katherine Zappone.

Human rights lawyer Deirdre Duffy welcomed news of the grants.

She said: “As a board member of LGBT Ireland, I may be accused of bias as I know of all their amazing work.

"But I am really delighted to see this funding for essential LGBTI+ services in Ireland.”

She continued: “The national organisations based in Dublin Central which will receive funding are LGBT Ireland, EPIC, TENI, Youth Work Ireland and BeLonGTo.

"And they each deserve every penny, if not more; we cannot underestimate the need for these support services.

"Many think everything was solved for LGBTI+ young people in Ireland after the passing of marriage equality, but here is still a long way to go."

The LGBTI+ National Youth Strategy 2018-2020 was launched in June of last year. The Strategy was the first of its kind in the world.

Minister Zappone said: “This initiative will have a long and wide-ranging impact on the quality of services offered to our young LGBTI+ people, all over the country.

"I am delighted at the range and quality of organisations who are developing exciting initiatives under this fund."
