Dublin hospitals treated 259 children for drug or alcohol related illnesses last year.

The patients were treated in Dublin's four children's hospitals in 2020.

Overall across the country, 914 kids were treated in Irish hospitals for illnesses relating to drugs and alcohol.

These conditions include drug or alcohol poisoning, mental health disorders due to substance misuse and new born children affected by mother's use of drugs or alcohol.

According to figures obtained by Newstalk, nearly two thirds of all those treated were girls.

28% of the minors were treated in children's hospitals.

686 of the children hospitalised were aged between 10 and 17, with twice as many girls as boys.

228 were under nine years of age
