Dublin homeless charity forced to close 'open policy' doors after serious threats from vandals who smashed its windows

A Dublin homeless charity has been forced to close its doors to service users after serious threats from vandals who smashed windows at its premises.

The Mendicity Institution, which is Dublin's oldest charity, usually operates an 'open door' policy.

But they have now been forced to close the doors on the Liberties location, with an apology posted to the door in five different languages.

Sharing the shocking images from the senseless attack, they said that they hope it will be a temporary measure for the charity and its service users safety.

They said: "We pride ourselves on our welcoming ‘open door’ policy for those who need us. But today we were forced to close our door after serious threats followed by an act of vandalism left our windows smashed.

"Our apology to our service users, written in 5 different languages, is still taped to our closed door. We hope this is a temporary precautionary measure for our safety and that of the people who depend on us every day. Charity is not an ‘extreme sport’."

One person responded to the images, asking if there was any way they could support the charity further.

They responded saying that "no value" is placed on services at a Government level.

They said: "We’re collecting “loyalty points’ with our glazier at this stage! We’re trying to make light, but we’re disheartened that at Government level, no value is placed on essential services, like ours, for Dublin’s homeless. For folk who have nowhere to go."
