Dublin holidaymakers warned as Spain hit with travel chaos and airport closures due to violent storms

Irish holidaymakers are being warned as the south coast of Spain is hammered by flash floods and intense storms.

Heavy rain accompanied with gale-force winds have caused a number of airports to close, while adding to long delays on holiday flights.

Palma airport in Mallorca was closed for over an hour this morning due to strong storms.

This led to both incoming and outgoing flights being forced to stop.

Flight diversions to Barcelona have caused a number of delays there.

A Dublin couple described scenes of destruction in the popular Spanish city of Alicante.

Thousands of Irish tourists flock to the Costa Blanca area every year.

Michael O'Hanlon and his wife Emer have been staying in Gran Alicant, about 15km south of Alicante.

The grandfather of seven from Portmarnock told Dublin Live: "The storm is like nothing I've ever seen before.

"The promenade in Alicante has been destroyed, while a tornado ripped through nearby Gaurdemar, which has been all but wiped out.

"It rained non stop all day yesterday, for 24 hours  and hundreds of homes have been damaged, with flood waters running houses like rivers. A year's rainfall has fallen in just one day. It's unreal.

"Sadly, we heard that two people died a little north of here near Orihula, when their car was swept into a river.

"I've never seen anything like this in Spain before and we've been coming here for years. It's terrifying."

Flights to and from Ibiza airport have also affected by the storms and Almeria airport was also forced to close.
