Dublin has a new world champion as Declan Geraghty defeats Richard Walter to lift UBO super middleweight belt

Boxer Declan Geraghty became Dublin's latest world champion as he secured the UBO super middleweight title with victory over Richard Walter

Geraghty had been scheduled to face the David Rajuili for the vacant title but the South African pulled out at the last minute, forcing a change of opponent on short notice.

32-year-old Czech journeyman Walter stepped up to the plate but he had no answer for the Dubliner's power and skill and a technical stoppage was called in the fifth round.

Geraghty, who fights under the banner of controversial promoters MTK Global, saw his scheduled opponent pull out at an hour's notice in Ostrava, Czechia.

The German-based Rajuili took issue with the gloves he was provided and refused to fight, forcing a frantic search for a replacement that was found in Walter.

Walter had no answer to a barrage of punches from the 31-year-old, however, and his corner threw in the towel in round number five.

Geraghty came to prominence in 2018 as he played out a 'fight of the year' contender with fellow Dub Jono Carroll.

A contentious disqualification for use of the head had seen Geraghty denied when the pair first met at the 3Arena in 2014.

Four years later, they met again, and this time Carroll went 16-0 with a ninth-round stoppage of an opponent with whom no love was lost.
