Dublin had sunniest May on record with almost 300 hours of sunshine

Dublin had its sunniest May on record last month, with almost 300 hours of sunshine.

There were 293.5 total hours of sunshine recorded at the Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, a mean daily average of 9.47 hrs a day.

That was the sunniest May in 56 years, when records began.

The capital was also the driest county in the country, with the lowest total amount of rainfall in Ireland recorded in the Phoenix Park.

At 8.3mm, it was the lowest figure for May recorded since 1991.

Dublin Airport was also home to the lowest recorded mean monthly temperature in the country at 10.9C.

The May 2020 weather statement from Met Eireann describes the month overall as "very dry and very sunny".

It said: "Continuing from April, May was another very dry and settled month with high pressure dominating once again.

"All monthly rainfall totals across the country were below their Long-Term Average.

"Mean temperatures for the month ranged from 10.9C (0.2C above its LTA) at Dublin Airport, Co Dublin to 13C (1C above its LTA) at Shannon Airport, Co Clare."

Current forecasts indicate that Dublin is looking to cooler temperatures heading into the weekend.

Temperatures will be between 9C and 16C, before heating up slightly on Sunday when they'll reach 18C.

There will be some rain, clouds and sunny spells across Ireland.
