Dublin girl Lucy Smith, 5, tragically dies after bravely battling rare brain tumour

A tragic little Dublin girl has passed away following a brave battling a rare form of cancer.

Lucy Smith, five, from Clarehall in north Dublin was diagnosed with terminal cancer in August 2019 after collapsing at home.

Her mum Sarah thought Lucy's symptoms might be a sign of an allergy but after an emergency visit to Temple Street Children's Hospital, doctors had bad news.

They diagnosed Lucy with a rare tumour called DIPG, or diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma and told her devastated parents that she only had months to live.

Lucy underwent emergency surgery and a shunt was inserted in her head to drain fluid from her brain.

Her parents decided not to proceed with palliative radiotherapy treatment and brought her home to make the most of their time together.

Lucy's family rallied around her and supporters raised over €35,000 through a GoFundMe page to help her family care for her and their five other children.

Sadly, Lucy died in the arms of her parents on Friday, October 18.

Lucy's funeral was held in St. Benedict’s Church, Grange Park on Monday morning with a cremation service afterwards in Dardistown Crematorium.
