Dublin garda charged over allegedly harassing, controlling and threatening former partner

Detectives were last night quizzing a uniformed member of the force over the alleged coercive control of his former partner.

The serving garda, who works in a Dublin station, was arrested by detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and has since been charged.

He was being held in a station in another part of the city last night where he could be detained for up to 24 hours.

The garda, who is in his 30s, is alleged to have harassed, controlled and threatened his former partner over a sustained period of time Coercive control was outlawed in 2018.

The case would normally be handled by the local protective services bureau, but it is understood the NBCI was drafted in because the suspect is a serving garda.

Gardai say the incidences of domestic violence have increased by as much as 25% during the pandemic.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "A male, aged in his early 40s, a serving member of An Garda Síochána, was arrested yesterday Wednesday, 9th June 2021 and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 in Lucan Garda Station for the investigation of offences in relation to coercive control.

"The male has now been charged and will appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice."

She added: "He is currently suspended from An Garda Síochana."
