Dublin GAA chairman doesn't rule out Stephen Cluxton stepping up to manager's job

Dublin GAA chairman Sean Shanley has insisted all options remain on the table regarding Jim Gavin’s replacement – including Stephen Cluxton possibly stepping up.

Former All-Ireland winning minor and U-21 boss Dessie Farrell remains the favourite though Shanley said at least half a dozen names are all credible contenders – including current captain fantastic Cluxton.

Shanley said: “Hopefully Stephen stays (playing) but we’d certainly have to talk to him, a captain that's after captaining Dublin to five-in-a-row, you'd have to talk to him and get his views but it's hard enough job being goalkeeper without being manager as well. Who knows?"

Dublin's management committee will meet tonight to plot their next move with Shanley and the board as surprised as the Dublin players who learned of the news at the Innisfails grounds on Saturday morning.

Shanley recently spoke with three-in-a-row All-Ireland winning Dublin ladies manager Mick Bohan about a notional return to the mens setup, before Gavin actually left, but Bohan ruled it out.

As for 2011 All-Ireland winning boss Pat Gilroy, Shanley said that ,’if he’s interested we would certainly talk to him’.

Shanley believes the setup should have some link to Gavin’s outgoing management team which contained Declan Darcy, Jason Sherlock and Paul Clarke.
