Dublin GAA ace Michael Darragh Macauley retires from inter-county football

Michael Darragh Macauley has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Dublin GAA ace confirmed the decision with a seven-word tweet this morning.

He posted a picture of himself walking around Croke Park on an All-Ireland final day, saying: "Sin é uaimse. Míle buíochas ó chroí."

It translates to: That's it from me. Many sincere thanks.

The Ballyboden St Enda's club man won eight All-Irelands, ten Leinster titles and two All-Stars in a hugely successful career. He was also crowned Footballer of the Year in 2013.

Tributes have been pouring in from Macauley's former teammates on social media.

Bernard Brogan said: "A unique and amazing person. Thanks MDMA!"

Ciaran Kilkenny added: Phenomenal drive & dedication.. a tank & a warrior. A special human being for who he is outside of football!"

Eamon Fennell tweeted: "One of the all time greats.

"Not sure who has a medal haul like him (club & county).

"An amazing ambassador for the game, who has given a lot back to many different communities. It was a pleasure to play with you pal, enjoy the next chapter."

Meanwhile, Dublin GAA posted on Facebook: "Michael Darragh Macauley has this morning announced his retirement from inter-county football. Thanks for everything you’ve done for the Blue jersey, Mick."
