Doyle was recognised as one of Ireland's best ballad singers with an impressive back catalogue that included songs such as Whiskey on a Sunday and A Daisy a Day.

He recorded a staggering 25 albums in total before retiring from music and relocating to the US, Dublin Live reports.

Tributes have been pouring in for the singer as fans, friends and fellow musicians rushed to social media to pay their respects.

One fan added: "I'm so sad to hear the news that the legendary Dublin singer and guitarist, Danny Doyle has passed away.

"I was always a huge fan of Danny's music and had all his albums. I just adored his choice of material."

"God speed Danny. Beannaigh Dia dá anam. Condolences to Taffy and the Doyle family.

A third said: "One of the most significant influences in my Irish writing life has been balladeer Danny Doyle. He shared his life and his music with me with openness and our shared love for the great stories songs."
