Dublin firefighters to protest outside council meeting over 'life and death' staffing crisis

Firefighters are set to protest outside a Dublin City Council meeting over the staffing crisis.

There are currently 965 firefighters in Dublin Fire Brigade while standards dictate there should be over 1,000.

Members of the fire brigade and SIPTU will be staging a demonstration at the Mansion House on Dawson Street on Monday, October 4 at 5.30 pm.

Sinn Fein Councillor Daithi Doolan said the shortfall has created a life and death situation for the crew and the public.

He said that the emergency service depends on overtime to keep it going which is "bad practise and very dangerous".

He added: "This summer saw fire trucks off the road and many fire stations not fully staffed.

"More recently on September 28, 6 fire trucks were off the road while another 9 trucks were not fully staffed. This is totally unacceptable.

"It puts lives at risk. Particularly as we face into Halloween, traditionally the busiest time of the year for emergency services."

He said that the party is demanding "staff be employed as a matter of urgency".

He continued: "There are 80 people on the staff panel and a further 300 applicants waiting to be interviewed. These applications could and should be processed as a matter of urgency.

"On Monday we will be supporting the SIPTU and Dublin Fire Brigade protest outside the Dublin City Council meeting. We are demanding that management respond to this crisis by immediately employing recruits, getting them trained and working as firefighters."
