Tributes have been pouring in after a heroic firefighter who served 37 years passed away.
Phibsboro Fire Station announced the heartbreaking news that Gerry Sweeney has passed with people describing him as a "true hero of Dublin".
Sweeney was the most senior member of his unit and was a great role model for junior members according to colleges who paid tribute to him earlier today.
Phibsboro's No.3 Station wrote: "It is with utter sadness and heartbreak that we hear of the passing of one of our own, Firefighter/Paramedic Gerry Sweeney, Badge :- 426.
"Gerry was a member of C-Watch in No.3 and was also the most senior firefighter on the watch with over 37 years service to the city and the brigade.
"Whenever Gerry entered the room everyone knew about it because he was always surrounded by energy, laughter and the occasional one liner, he mentored many junior firefighters who have come through the station and has left a legacy behind him.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ger's family, friends, his colleagues in the DFB and to his crew of C-Watch, No.3
"Gerry will be given full brigade honours with details to follow.
"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
People replied with heartbreak describing Gerry as a "true hero of Dublin" while another called him a "ball of energy".
One wrote: "So sad to hear this, Gerry was such a character, may he Rest In Peace.
Another said: "One of the kindest genuine men you could meet, always smiling and always so lovely to us - a true gent."
