Dublin Fire Brigade working to fix safety defects at over 20 apartment blocks across the city

Dublin Fire Brigade are currently working to fix serious fire safety deficiencies in 24 apartment blocks across the city.

The fire service have confirmed they are working with management companies on remediation programmes that could cost tens of thousands of euro and involve significant works.

The names and locations of the developments have not been revealed.

Residents of Blanchardstown apartment complex face massive bill to fix fire safety issues

And it is feared the number of developments that require remedial works could be much higher as the figures released only refer to sites where work is already underway, reports the Irish Times.

DFB have inspected almost 8,000 premises since 2012, including 890 apartments.

While some issues can be rectified immediately, others require completion of fire-risk assessments and follow up inspections while a smaller number require substantial work.

The news comes after it emerged that homeowners at a north Dublin apartment building are facing bills of up to €50,000 each to remedy fire safety issues.

The Verdemont complex has been the scene of tragedy in the past. In 2002 young couple Lousie Wall and Mick Farrell died after a blaze broke out in their apartment.

A coroner's report found that there were a number of fire safety issues in the flat.

A large number of residents were evacuated two years ago after a blaze ripped through the top floor of the building.

Local councillor Paul Donnelly has called on the Government to provide financial support to residents of the complex.

He said: “I am absolutely shocked at the massive cost of the remedial works in the entire apartment complex. "
