Dublin Fire Brigade rescue hamster from Portmarnock home as blanket catches fire from sun reflected on mirror

It was a lucky escape for a pet hamster following a fire in a family home in north Dublin.

The four legged family member was rescued by Dublin Fire Brigade firefighters from their home in Portmarnock.

The Kilbarrack and North Strand stationed firefighters did a great job in ensuring the adorable little pet was unharmed after a blanket caught fire due to the sunshine.

In an important message about mirror and sun ray safety, DFB said the fire is believed to have started when sun rays reflected onto a mirror and then on to blankets - causing them to catch fire.

They said: "Firefighters from Kilbarrack and North Strand rescued a pet hamster in Portmarnock following a fire in the family home.

"The fire is believed to have started by sun rays reflecting from a mirror on to blankets causing them to catch fire. Do you have mirrors catching the sun?"

Last night, firefighters were called to reports of a fire within a shed in Ballymun.

Firefighters were forced to use sledgehammers at the scene to break down the shed wall.

The crew searched the premises as smoke billowed out from the building but despite the reports from locals, the emergency services found nobody inside.
