Dublin Fire Brigade called to over 40 bonfires the day before Halloween

It may not be Halloween until tomorrow but Dublin Fire Brigade have already found themselves under pressure having responded to calls to over 40 bonfires today.

Tomorrow is usually the busiest day of the year for the capital's brave firefighters but they have had to start a day early this year with a string of calls to fires.

Officials confirmed they have called to 43 fires in the Dublin area since midnight.

They tweeted: "Since midnight we've been called to 43 bonfires in the Dublin area.

"Some have been stockpiles set alight while other have been pre #Halloween fires."

On of the bonfires was set close to a primary school in west Dublin.

Local Councillor Paul Donnelly shared footage of a fire raging beside Ladyswell National School in Dublin 15.

He said: "Serious fire in Ladyswell national school. It appears that it’s the new building works that has gone up. I really hope this wasn’t a targeted attack."

A Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed to Dublin Live that a stockpile of pallets had been set alight near the school but had since been extinguished.

Firefighters will be hoping that the weather helps to dampen bonfires tomorrow night.

Met Eireann are currently predicting scattered outbreaks of rain to hit tomorrow afternoon.

These showers are expected to become widespread as darkness descends with Halloween night set to be a washout across the city.
