Dublin Fire Brigade advise against doing one thing that increases risk of home blazes from cigarettes

Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a warning about the potential devastation of home blazes caused by cigarettes and vapes this Christmas.

Some people are even blocking up smoke alarms as they are going off due to cigarette smoke, a practice fire chiefs have dubbed a "dangerous game".

DFB said: "It is not unusual for us to see smoke alarms covered or removed because of activations due to cigarette smoke.

"This is a dangerous game. Heat detectors can replace smoke alarms but are not as effective."

Cigarettes are thought to cause up to a quarter of all fires nationally.

The Fire Brigade took to social media to issue some advice that can keep people safe in the home over the festive season and beyond.

They said: "Cigarettes are another common cause of fires. Ensure they are fully extinguished before you dispose of them.

"Get in to the practice of wetting the butts before disposing of them responsibly. Empty ashtrays often."

DFB also warned that vapes and e-cigarettes can also pose a danger.

They added: "If you use an e-cigarette or vape treat them like any other device; don't over charge them and dispose of them is you believe them to be faulty. Charge them on a solid non-flammable surface.

"We see fires in the home as a result of cigarettes. You should not smoke in bed, while tired, after taking sleeping medication, or under the influence of alcohol.

"Cigarettes can smoulder on bedding or clothes for a long time. The person might not even be aware."
