Dublin farm raising funds for children's hospice with new recycling facility

Airfield Estate has introduced a brand new "reverse vending machine" which aims to promote recycling and raise money for an important Irish charity, Laura Lynn Foundation.

The urban farm, which is located in Dundrum, puts sustainability at the forefront of everything that they do, from the food in their restaurant, Overends Kitchen, to other events that happen throughout the year.

Taking to Instagram last week, they posted a video and images explaining how the reverse vending machine works, telling their followers that for every PET plastic bottle and aluminium can recycled using the new machine, an automatic donation will be made by Capital Credit Union to the Laura Lynn Foundation and The Community Food Hub.

To use the machine, you insert your bottle or can bottom first, press a button and the donation is made.

The Laura Lynn Foundation's mission is to provide evidence-based, personalised services to children with palliative care needs, complex care needs and complex disabilities, while also providing support to families.

Originally established in 1923 as a convalescence home for children from the inner city, LauraLynn House, a dedicated eight bed children’s palliative care unit, opened in 2011.

In addition to the LauraLynn House are Hazel House, Holly Oaks and Willow View, where the organisation provides care for young people with intellectual disabilities.

Meanwhile, The Community Food Hub aims to help people help themselves to make better food choices by planning and cooking healthy, nutritious meals on a budget of less than €10 per family meal.
