Dublin eatery crowned Irish UberEats Restaurant of the Year

Vegan Sandwich Co in Smithfield have officially won the Irish category of the UberEats Restaurant of the Year award and will jet off to London to meet Bake Off judge Prue Leith in the next stage of the competition.

The restaurant, which offers customers a full vegan menu, was nominated for the award back in May along with nine other contenders. They confirmed the news on social media and thanked both voters and staff for getting them to the final stage of the competition.

“We now have the opportunity to represent Ireland in the UK and Ireland grand finale in London against some incredible competition. I can’t wait to show how good Irish food can be. We have the opportunity as a vegan business to show that plant based food can be just as delicious as any other food,” founder Sam Pearson said in a post on Instagram.

The company was initially set up in Smithfield but has since expanded to include premises in Stephen’s Green and most recently the Swan Centre in Rathmines. The overall winner of the UberEats competition will win a staggering cash prize of £100,000 (€117,000).

The Northern Irish winner, eatery Love Pizza, will also participate in the grand finale in London.

The business also announced to their followers a special discount to celebrate their victory. Customers in the Rathmines branch can avail of a generous buy one get one free offer for the rest of this week through the UberEats Instagram page.

Restaurant owner Sam Pearson previously shared his elation at the thought of meeting Prue Leith, saying it would be “a dream come true” to speak with the Bake-Off judge in person.

“If we win, we would get to represent Ireland on an international scale, which would truly be mind-blowing. There would be photos I would cherish to the end of time of Prue Leith holding a vegan chicken fillet roll. I would be the happiest man alive,” Sam told the Mirror.

The winner of the 2022 competition will be revealed this August.
