Arrest made as Dublin driver smashes car into lamppost before fleeing scene

A driver smashed a car into a lamppost in South Dublin before fleeing the scene.

The incident happened in Churchtown on Friday night, July 2.

The driver, a male in his 20s was arrested and conveyed to Rathfarnham Garda Station.

He has since been released pending further investigation.

Images show a damaged VolksWagen car and a streetlight knocked on the ground following the crash.

Firefighters attended the scene but the driver was gone by the time they arrived.

A spokesperson for Dublin Fire Brigade said: “Rathfarnham firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Braemor Road in Churchtown last night.

“A vehicle had collided with a street light, no occupants on arrival.

“With the assistance of ESB Networks the scene was made safe.”

It is unknown if the driver of the car sustained injuries.
