Dublin dog cheats death after cheekily stealing food from BBQ but accidentally swallowing skewer

An 11-year-old Dublin cocker spaniel is very lucky to be alive after swallowing a skewer whole at a BBQ this week.

The mischievous Marley decided to rob some food from his owners who were cooking up a treat in the summer sunshine.

While their backs were turned, Marley stole the skewer and swallowed it whole food and all.

The owners knew that Marley had stolen the grub but didn't imagine that the sharp utensil had been gobbled up also.

Over the next two days, Marley's mood began to change and he became more uncomfortable and grumpy than usual.

His owners were concerned and brought him to the vet who took x-rays which showed that Marley had munched the entire metal skewer.

He was referred to UCD Veterinary Hospital as an urgent emergency where they investigated if the skewer had caused any major internal damage.

Specialist vets Dr Robert Shiel and Dr Monica Augusto used a special piece of equipment to locate and successfully remove the skewer.

UCD Veterinary Hospital said: "Miraculously, Marley had a very lucky escape as there was no major internal damage! Without this successful removal he could have faced major emergency surgery to remove the skewer.

"Marley was discharged from hospital the next day, none the wiser to just how lucky he had been."

They added: "His owners emailed us to let us know that he is back to himself, barking at the postman and loving life but unfortunately for Marley, his BBQ days are most definitely over."
