Dublin doctor claims health chiefs not recommending wearing of face masks over fears it will add to PPE demand

A GP has claimed the State’s top doctors have not recommended the wearing of face masks over fears it will add pressure to the demand for PPE.

Ranelagh-based Dr Maitiu O Tuathail said Ireland is becoming an “outlier” when it comes to the issue.

He told Dublin Live: “There’s overwhelming scientific evidence. All of our eminent infectious disease consultants are clearly saying there is a role for masks and it’s becoming harder to justify the fact we’re not making the same recommendation here.

“I don’t mean everyone should be walking around wearing surgical masks.

"It means wearing homemade cotton masks where social distancing is difficult such as public transport and shopping.

“The decision is being influenced not by science but by concern over a lack of availability.

“We should be giving the advice to protect people.”

The Department of Health was contacted for comment.
