Dublin dad petitions for suitable home for son with mental health disorder so family can live happier life

A Dublin dad has been petitioning for a more suitable home for his son who has a mental health disorder so their family can live a happier life.

James Carey started a Change.org petition to get the attention of Dublin City Council.

His son Jackson has EBD emotional and behavioural disturbance. The family's current accommodation isn't suitable for his condition.

Mr Carey said: “We have been trying to get our son help since he was only a few months old as we noticed very early on that Jackson was different to other children.

“We have not stopped the last 8 years with multiple counselling sessions, therapies, psychologists, doctors and more.

“Our current accommodation, although we have tried to make it as comfortable for our family to live in, is just not suitable for the type of condition Jackson suffers with.

“Jackson needs open space and a larger accommodation to be able to regulate and control his anger, extreme mood swings and uncontrollable physical episodes, in a safe and secure manner."

The family are looking to transfer to a more appropriate location, which is safe and secure and is conducive with their treatment and management of Jackson's condition.

James continued: “We have come to the realisation that there is no cure for what Jackson has, there are just different ways to manage and control his condition but our ability to do this is virtually impossible as long as we remain in our current home.

“We are in an endless cycle of stress, worry, anxiety and depression that comes with having a child with a mental health illness.

“A Mental health disability should be treated just as much as a physical disability, just because it is not seen does not mean it does not exist.”
