Dublin Covid-19 lockdown: Restrictions will be in place this weekend if capital is moved to Level 3

Restrictions will be in place by this weekend if Dublin is moved to Level 3, it has been revealed.

The capital is already experiencing slightly different measures to the rest of the country as a result of the high level of coronavirus there.

And the Government may update its level following recommendations from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

NPHET is meeting today to discuss the situation, with Cabinet set to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow to decide on what further restrictions will be put in place.

Yesterday, 254 new cases were confirmed- and 136 of those were in Dublin alone, 55% of all new cases.

Dublin has now seen a total of 14,883 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said today that if additional measures are announced for the capital, they will be enforced "before the weekend."

She told RTE's Morning Ireland said the cases in Dublin showed a "worrying trend."

Ms McEntee added that the new oversight committee has been established to help implement new recommendations quickly.

But one expert feels Dublin should be moved to Level 4, given the severity of the situation.

GP Dr Ray Walley said NPHET's recommendations for Dublin must be dealt with in a prompt manner.

The medic expressed concerns about the numbers allowed to attend weddings and events if Dublin moves to Level 3 of Covid restrictions.

At this level, up to 25 people can still attend weddings and other events.

Dr Walley, who is Vice President of the European Doctors Association, advised against this and said Dublin should be moved to Level 4 instead given recent outbreaks.

Speaking on RTE's Today with Claire Byrne, he said it is something NPHET has to "seriously consider."
