Dublin couple celebrate 65th wedding anniversary in style while cocooning

A Dublin couple that have been cocooning for several weeks have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in style.

Jack and May Healy, both 94-years-old and living Monkstown, were surprised by their family who held a garden party while practising social distancing guidelines.

Despite the limitations, there were celebrations all round for their extended family, with those who were outside the 2km limit sending well wishes.

And they also revealed the secret to a long and happy marriage.

Speaking to RTE News, Jack joked: "She's the boss. I follow on."

While May said: "Don't mind him! I may be the boss indirectly, but he has the last word."

And the couple were very thankful to have their family celebrate their special day, with bigger celebrations planned for when the COVID-19 restrictions are over.

Jack said: "It would have been lovely to have them all, which was the original plan, which we did every year, but we're missing out this year.

Their son Paul added: "I think they're getting a great kick out of it, and we're delighted that we were able to do it in some small way."

And their daughter Ann said although they had to postpone the party, it was "something to look forward to".

She told RTE: "It's awful not to be able to go into the house when they need help.

"They live here unaided, they've no carers except for the family, so it's very difficult not being able to go over the threshold."

Originally from Cork, Jack and May were married in St Agnes' Church in Crumlin, Dublin on 12 April 1955.

Family members who couldn't attend the party sent well wishes online.

Their great grandchildren Siobhan, Liam and Cillian Leonard sent a lovely video wishing them congratulations.

They said: "We miss you, we love you. We can't wait to see you."

While granddaughter Roisin Maher sent a message all the way from Dubai.

She said: "Happy anniversary from lockdown Dubai! It's really hard being so far away from home."

After the garden party, the family stood outside the home and gave a round of applause and a hip hip hooray for Jack and May while they shared an anniversary kiss.
