Dublin council opens book of condolence for Ireland's Founding Father of Peace John Hume, who was laid to rest today

Mayor of Fingal David Healy has opened a digital Book of Condolences for Dubliners who wish to pay tribute to the late John Hume, who died this week.

Mr Hume was laid to rest in his native Derry earlier today, where mourners heard that the former SDLP leader put everybody first and did not focus on difference and division.

Peacemaker Hume was the driving force behind the Peace Process which led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and brought to an end decades of violence in Northern Ireland.

The online book of condolences will remain open until August 21 when it will be printed and forwarded to the Hume family.

Mr Hume's funeral service took place at St Eugene's Cathedral, where Fr Paul Farren said "he focused on unity and peace, and giving that dignity to every person".

"We should never underestimate how difficult it was for John to cross the road and do what was intensely unpopular for the greater good," he continued.

"Even in the darkest moments, when people would have been forgiven for having no hope, John made peace visible for others."
