Dublin council members to call for nationalisation of Ireland's private hospital care

Members of Dublin's biggest council are to call for the nationalisation of Ireland's private hospitals at a meeting on Monday.

It follows a plea by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation this week that called for private hospital capacity to be fully nationalised into the public system.

The motion, being proposed by PBP's Tina McVeigh and Sinn Fein's Maire Devine, is being brought forward in support of the campaign for an All Ireland National Health Service.

There has already been support from the campaign by three other councils, along with trade unionists, academics, community activists and health care workers.

Councillor Devine, who is a nurse, said: "I am delighted to be supporting his motion. It’s just common sense to provide an all Ireland health service. Disease doesn’t recognise borders . We urgently need a Health service for our Nation- one that is equitable and based on need. It makes complete health and economic sense - this is a no brainer."

Among the key demands in the campaign are the taking into public control of private hospitals, the exclusion of private practice and fees from public hospitals, an enhanced career structure for nurses and health care workers North and South, an integrated all-Ireland Health and Social Care service and publicly established system to regulate access to and pricing of medicines across the island of Ireland.
