Dublin community groups walk away big winners at Ireland's Pride of Place awards

It was a great night for Dublin groups who were big winners at Saturday night’s Pride of Place awards in Kilkenny.

Groups from across the north and south of the capital walked away with acknowledgement of their work on a local level.

Among them was the Liberties Cultural Association which was honoured in the ‘Communities Reaching Out’ category by the judges for their “incredible work” in helping people dealing with poverty in the area and efforts to keep the history of the area alive.

Other honorees were Flemington, Fingal which took best Urban Neighbourhood, with Firhouse, South Dublin, coming runner up.

St Patrick’s Rowing Club, Ringsend, also lifted the trophy for winner of the best Urban Neighbourhood with a population between 1000 and 2000.

Meadowlands in Dun Laoghaire and Whitestown, Fingal were runners up in the best Housing Estate category, losing out to Ardrew Meadows, Kildare.

Finally, The National Maritime Museum, Dún Laoghaire, received a special award for its work in preserving local history.

Sponsored by IPB, the Pride of Place competition began  18 years ago though a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development.

It has grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements on the island of Ireland.

Pride of Place founder and Chairman Tom Dowling said: “These Awards continue to be as important as ever after all these years and the purpose of the awards has never changed.

"They are about recognising and celebrating the extraordinary, inspirational tireless work being done by communities all over the Island of Ireland as they strive to make their place a better place in which to live.”
