Dublin communities 'held to ransom' as pitches damaged by scramblers on Christmas morning

Parents have been reminded of the dangers of scramblers after another Christmas morning of reckless damage caused by the vehicles.

Pitches in both Drimnagh and Cherry Orchard have been left destroyed by machines, with communities now being "held to ransom".

A bill is being put forward to tackle the ongoing issue which is ravaging community groups and their facilities across Dublin.

Only last month, Dublin Live shared distressing footage that highlighted just how devastating a scrambler accident can be for drivers, passengers, onlookers and their families.

Currently, there is no legislation to prosecute underage drivers or their parents when the scrambler bike is claimed back after being seized by gardai.

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan, chair of the Joint Policing Committee, said: "Pitches & greens were seriously damaged by Christmas scramblers in Drimnagh and Cherry Orchard.

"Christmas morning has become another Halloween. Communities can not be held to ransom by scramblers. Parents must stop buying children scramblers. These are not toys. These are destroying our recreation facilities. This is unacceptable. It must be tackled head on by Gardaí and City Council. This will be a priority for me in 2021."
